The 2007 New England In-House Board of Editors

New England In-House is proud to introduce its new Board of Editors. These individuals have graciously offered to assist In-House in meeting its editorial mission of providing the most current and useful information to in-house lawyers and corporate counsel throughout New England.

The board will also provide advice on ways In-House can be even more closely integrated into the in-house community in our region.

Paul Cushing is chief litigation counsel of Partners Healthcare System, Inc., which operates Massachusetts General Hospital and Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, as well as other community and specialty hospitals, community health centers and a network of primary care and specialty physicians. He also serves as the secretary of both Partners Continuing Care, Inc. and the Rehabilitation Hospital of the Cape and Islands, Inc. Paul focuses on dispute resolution with an emphasis on intellectual property and general commercial litigation.

Thomas Farrell recently opened his own law firm of Farrell & Associates, after having served as deputy general counsel of Tyco International. Tom is immediate past president of the Northeast Chapter of the Association of Corporate Counsel. He started his career as a litigation associate at Peabody & Arnold in Boston.

Steven Gans is chief operating officer and general counsel of Newton, Mass.-based Jessica’s Biscuit/ecookbooks.com and New England Mobile Book Fair, the nation’s leading Internet/catalog cookbook business. He is vice president of the New England Corporate Counsel Association. Steve is currently of counsel with the Boston law firm of Broude & Hochberg, and he previously worked at Goulston & Storrs in Boston.

John Hansen is director of member services and government affairs for the Waltham, Mass. based-Ethics & Compliance Officer Association (the ECOA), the largest professional association of ethics and compliance executives in the world. Jack works with member organizations globally on the integration of governance, risk, compliance and ethics in their business enterprises. As corporate counsel for 14 years with State Street Corporation, Jack was responsible for representing the enterprise risk management division of the company where he advised the firm on governance, compliance and business conduct matters.

Christine Hughes is vice president and general counsel of Emerson College in Boston. Christine co-chairs the College and University Section of the Boston Bar Association. She is 24-year practitioner in the public, private and non-profit sectors, including stints as general counsel to the New England Legal Foundation, chief legal counsel to the University of Washington, and staff attorney at Harvard University. Christine started her legal career at Goodwin Procter and Hale and Dorr (now Wilmer Hale).

Evan Kaplan is associate general counsel at the Harcourt Education Group of Reed-Elsevier, Inc. Evan has represented various educational, trade, scientific and medical publishers as in-house legal counsel for over 15 years. Evan is the former chair of the Association of American Publishers Copyright Education Committee, and he has served as director and officer of MassBioEd, and the Massachusetts Biotechnology Council’s Education Foundation.

Catherine Mannick is executive vice president and general counsel of Cole Management, LLC, which manages Russia-focused venture capital investments. Cathy previously served as vice president and assistant general counsel of Pioneer Group, a Boston-based financial services company, and was general counsel of Pioneer’s spin-off company, Harbor Global. She is a member of the board of directors of the Northeast Chapter of the Association of Corporate Counsel.

Christopher Mirabile is general counsel at Iona Technologies, an integration software company based in Waltham, Mass. Christopher was previously with the business group at Testa, Hurwitz & Thibeault, LLP of Boston, where he represented both private and publicly-held companies with a focus on corporate and securities law, public and private securities offerings, and mergers & acquisitions. He is a member of the Board of Directors of the Northeast Chapter of the Association of Corporate Counsel.

Barry Nagler is senior vice president and general counsel at Hasbro, Inc. based in Pawtucket, R.I. Prior to joining Hasbro in 2000, Barry spent 12 years at Reebock International Ltd, including nearly six years as general counsel. Barry is the immediate past chair of the national Board of Directors of the Association of Corporate Counsel.

Christine Nickerson is senior legal counsel at Rhode Island-based CVS Corporation, specializing in employment law. Prior to CVS/pharmacy, Christine practiced with union-side labor firms in Boston and in Providence, R.I. Christine is a contributor to the 2002 and 2004 Cumulative Supplement to the Barbara Lindemann & Paul Grossman, Employment Discrimination Law treatise.

William O’Brien is corporate counsel at Hewlett-Packard. He previously held senior legal positions at both Compaq and Digital. He currently serves as the president of the Northeast Chapter of the Association of Corporate Counsel.

John Opperman is executive vice president and deputy general counsel of TD Banknorth, Inc. in Portland, Maine. He joined TD Banknorth in 1998, following 20 years of private practice in banking, business, consumer and commercial law with the Portland law firm of Perkins, Thompson, Hinckley & Keddy. John has served on the Maine Bar Foundation Board of Directors, and on the Leadership Committee of the Campaign for Justice. He is currently on the boards of the Maine Humanities Council and the Simmons Foundation.

Heidi Osborn is vice president and deputy general counsel with UnumProvident Corporation in Portland, Maine. She is a member of the Insurance Operations Law Group, specializing in insurance and employee benefits law, including the ERISA, tax, and commercial laws applicable to employer-sponsored welfare benefit plans and worksite insurance offerings. Heidi has been with UnumProvident for 22 years and has previously advised the company in the areas of employment law and disability and life insurance claims law.

Scott Squillace is European counsel at Cabot Corporation in its Boston headquarters overseeing two operating units of the company. He is also global data privacy officer at the company, which is a specialty chemical business with operations throughout the world. He previously served as chief European counsel for Levi Strauss & Co. and was based in Brussels. Scott serves on a number of non-profit boards. He is a former president of the Northeast Chapter of the Association of Corporate Counsel.

Danette Wineberg is vice president and general counsel at The Timberland Company based in Stratham, N.H. Prior to joining Timberland in 1997, Danette served as general counsel for Little Caesar Enterprises, Inc. in Detroit, and as corporate counsel for Highland Superstores, Inc. in Plymouth, Mich. Danette serves youth in the community as a member of the Board of Directors for OdysseyNH, an organization dedicated to helping troubled young people and families heal, learn and grow leading to constructive participation in society.
